HEALING - NYERE FORSKNING (1993 +)
(Healing research: references. Please send a mail if you know of other studies not listed here!!)
Healing = energy-interventions as in energy healing, spiritual healing, Therapeutic Touch,
Reiki healing and chi gong healing, all different names describing the same phenomenon..
(Oversikten er laget av Else Egeland. I hovedsak forskningsartikler. Mye av forskningen er sykepleieforskning, healing er integrert som sykepleiemetode allerede fra 70-tallet. I USA omtales healing som den mest dokumenterte av de alternative / komplementære behandlingsformer).

Benor, D. Distant healing. Subtle Energies 11(3), 249-2664, 2000. The International Society for the Study of Subtle Energies and Energy Medicine (ISSSEEM). Abstract : This article reviews 61 studies of distant healing, which is healing that is deliberately sent by one or more healers as an intent, wish, meditation, or prayer to a healee who may be in the healers' presence or may be far away. Distance, even thousands of miles, does not appear to limit the effects of healing. Significant effects of distant healing are demonstrated randomized controlled trials in humans, animals, plants, bacteria, yeasts, cells in the laboratory, and DNA. Fascinating new insights about energy medicine and integrative care are suggested by these studies. Noteworthy are 120 further randomized controlled studies of healing given with the healers' hands held on or near the body, again with many of these demonstrating highly significant effects, not included in this article. While distant healing appears to contradict our ordinary sense of reality and the laws defined by conventional science, there are several theoretical paradigms that suggest explanations for healing. Movaffaghi Z, Hasanpoor M, Farsi M, Hooshmand P, Abrishami F. Effects of therapeutic touch on blood hemoglobin and hematocrit level. J Holist Nurs. 2006 Mar;24(1):41-8. Abstract: Therapeutic Touch (TT) is a widely used complementary therapy. This study investigated the effects of TT on hemoglobin and hematocrit level in students who were basically healthy. Method: The volunteers with a hemoglobin level less than 12 grams per deciliter (g/dl) were randomly assigned to three groups of TT, mimic therapeutic touch (MT), and control. Blood samples were collected before the first treatment and again a week after the last one and measurements were taken. Results: TT increased the level of hemoglobin (.99 .13 g/dl) and hematocrit (2.82 .43%) significantly. MT also increased the level of hemoglobin (.55 .11 g/dl) and hematocrit (2.75 .44%) significantly. No significant changes were found in the control group. TT increased hemoglobin more effectively than MT (p< .05). Conclusions: Significant changes of both variables in TT and MTgroups suggest that more careful precision might be needed while selecting individuals as sham therapists in further experiments Link.

Abstract: Alternative treatments such as spiritual healing and prayer are increasingly popular, especially among patients with life-threatening diseases such as cancer. According to theories of spiritual healing, this intervention is thought to influence living cells and organisms independently of the recipient's conscious awareness of the healer's intention. The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that spiritual healing will reduce proliferation and viability of two cancer cell lines in vitro. Three controlled experiments were conducted with three different healers and randomised allocation of cells to five different doses of healing or control. Researchers conducting the assays and statistical analyses were blinded to the experimental conditions. Main outcome measures were MTT viability, 3H-thymidine incorporation and counts of an adherent human breast cancer cell line (MCF-7), and a nonadherent mouse B-lymphoid cell line (HB-94). Analyses of variance (ANOVAs) revealed no significant main or dose-related effects of spiritual healing compared to controls for either of the two cell lines or any of the assays (P-values between 0.09 and 0.96). When comparing healing and control across all three experimental days, doses, assays, and cells, 34 (51.6%) of 66 independent comparisons showed differences in the hypothesised direction (P=0.90). The average effect size across cell lines, days, assays, and doses approached zero (Cohen's d=-0.01). The results do not support previous reports of beneficial effects of spiritual healing on malignant cell growth in vitro. Reported beneficial effects of spiritual healing on the well-being of cancer patients seem more likely to be mediated by psychosocial and psychophysiological effects of the healer-patient relationship.

In other words, close to three quarters (72.9 percent) of all the experiments demonstrate significant effects. "

Sicher, Fred; Targ, Elisabeth; Moore, Dan; and Smith, Helene S. A randomized, double-blind study of the effects of distant healing in a population with advanced AIDS, Western J. of Medicine 1998,. 169(6), 356-363].
To examine the effects of distant healing on people who have advanced AIDS, this randomized, double-blind study was done through the California Medical Center¹s Complementary Medicine Research Institute. The 40 volunteers (37 men, three women) all received regular medical care at several medical centers and were randomly divided into two groups to receive either distant healing or no healing. Healing was sent by 40 healers who lived in various parts of the United States and came from several religious backgrounds, including Christianity, Buddhism, and a number of shamanic traditions. All of the healers had at least five years' healing experience and were accustomed to distant healing. The healing lasted 10 weeks, and healers were randomly rotated throughout. Subjects and doctors were blind as to who was receiving healing and when.
At the outset, there were no significant differences between the experimental and control groups. After six months, the experimental group had significantly fewer AIDS-related illnesses (modest significance: p < .04) and lower severity of illness (modest significance: p < .02). Visits to doctors and hospitalizations were less frequent and days in hospital were also lower, all to a significant level. Improvements in mood where also noted (p < .04).
Comment: This excellent study demonstrates significant effects of healing on AIDS. No comparisons were made regarding medical treatment at several medical centers, although treatments were given with a standard combination of medications. It is theoretically possible that the experimental group might have received some medical treatment that gave them an advantage over the control group. However, there is no known conventional medical treatment that can produce the results seen here. Rating: II
It is particularly encouraging to have a study showing significant benefits of distant healing for AIDS. I hope this study will encourage replicating research. It would be particularly helpful to have research with a tighter design, having both experimental and control groups treated at the same center under the same treatment regimen.

AIDS and Therapeutic Touch : Clare Thomasson Garrard
Clare Garrard explored the effects of Therapeutic Touch (TT) and mock (simulated) Therapeutic Touch (MTT) treatments on 20 men between the ages of 22 and 34 who were HIV positive. A TT healer with six years¹ experience administered treatments for 20 minutes to the men in the TT group. The healer used five minutes for assessing the energy field and the rest of the time for treatment. Subjects all wore headphones and sleep masks so that they would not be aware of the presence of the healer. In the MTT group, the healer entered the room silently and stayed there for 20 minutes without giving healing. Subjects were matched or randomized to either TT or MTT.
To measure the healing effects, CD4 cell (a type of white blood cell deficient in people with AIDS) counts were made before the treatments, and then at three, six, and nine weeks after. As well, a test that measures the ability to cope with stress was given before treatment and after nine weeks. Stress has been shown to contribute to the deterioration of health in HIV-positive people.
By week nine, the two groups showed significant differences in CD4 counts, as well as in resources for coping with stress.
Comment: The study demonstrates that Therapeutic Touch has significant effects on white blood cell counts and on stress reduction. However, it does not confirm that Therapeutic Touch is effective in the long-term treatment of AIDS, though it does appear promising. Rating: II
Garrard's study is of great importance because thus far there have been no effective treatments for AIDS. It is of particular note because stress contributes to the deterioration of health in HIV positive people, and HIV illness is very stressful. A treatment which can improve both aspects of this disease with no known side effects is most welcome.

The present study investigated the effects of Korean Qi-therapy, ChunSoo Energy Healing, on natural killer (NK) cell cytotoxicity in vitro depending on Qi-treatment time and the types of cells treated. NK cell cytotoxicity was assayed by measuring LDH release from tumor target cells (K562 cell lines). NK activity was significantly increased by emitted-Qi treatment of 30 sec duration. Three and 5 minutes of Qi projection created the greatest increase in NK cell activity when mixtures of NK cells and K562 cells were treated (1.81 and 2.12 fold for 4 hr culture; 1.54 and 1.36 for 16 hr culture, respectively). NK cell activity increased significantly in Qi-treated K562 cells alone (1.13 fold, p<0.05) compared to control. These results are consistent with in vivo Qi-therapy on humans and suggests that emitted-Qi has an acute stimulatory effect on NK cell activity. This study provides direct scientific support that Qi as such may positively affect human cellular immunity.
