The long read: After the invasion of Ukraine, thousands of Russians fled to Tbilisi. But the graffiti that has sprung up across the city suggests not everyone is pleased to see them

The controversial Deputy Secretary of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev is hiding his luxury yacht Universe in Istanbul. It was driven to the Turkish port from the Russian city of Sochi.

Ukrainian forces continue to squeeze the Russian forces by cutting their supply routes and destroying their logistics before they reach the battle front. From Kherson to Kharkiv Ukrainian troops continue to engage the Russian defences giving them no respite while the Russians are forced to use ammunition they struggle to replace. Bridges are closed, roads are under constant artillery fire. Kherson and Crimea are steadily being isolated from Donbas.
Russia troops reinforce Zaporizhizhia so Ukraine crosses the Dnipro near Kherson to establish new bridgeheads. Russian moves east so Ukraine strikes west. Russian forces are being stretched to their limits. They cannot cruise the Black Sea anymore. Their ships cannot even go into harbour without fear of a marine drone strike. Ukraine is not the only party who cannot move grain to the Mediterranean anymore.
Drones have hit Moscow so their is no longer a way that Russian oligarchs can claim that the war is a special military operation a long way from home. Russian income from oil and gas plunged 40% this year, their cash account or wealth fund is a third of what it was two years ago.
Conservative estimates from several reliable sources claim that Russia has lost 250,000 soldiers in this failed war and they lose an average of 500 more per day. Russian obituary records counted 280,000 since Feb 2022. Whatever source we rely on we know these numbers are unsustainable.
While the western democracies continue their support of Ukraine Russia cannot win. Putin is being squeezed stretched and pushed to his limits.
Fryktelig trist.

The Ukrainian counteroffensive is not slow - it is smart. There has been reports that some western countries finds that the Ukrainian counteroffensive is too slow, not making enough progress and that Ukraine was expected to take back more land quickly.
But lets look into what is actually happening on the battlefield. What happened before the counteroffensive was that many western countries did hold back weapon deliveries for Ukraine, tanks, artillery, F-16s, long range missiles are a few examples, this gave russia time to entrench themselves and to layout massive minefields.
When the Ukrainians began the counteroffensive they did try to use the mobility of their new armoured brigades (2-3 out of 12 where send into action) and it quickly turned out that this was not the right way. So Ukraine did what any good military would do, analyse, adjust and adapt to the conditions on the battlefield.
So at the current time we see that the Ukrainians have entered a attrition phase, they take out lots of russian artillery systems, they destroy their infrastructure and disrupt their supply lines, and at the same time they make probing attacks along the frontline, combined with larger unarmoured attacks in certain areas. At some point we will see Ukraine change to manoeuvre warfare again, this time they will most likely send in more armoured brigades.
So what Ukraine have done is fighting smart - adapting to the conditions on the battlefield.
But the lesson learned is that there are no, as in absolutely no, reason for holding back support for Ukraine. Give them the tools they need to defend themselves, this is the fastest way to peace.
With Russia blockading Ukraine’s eastern ports, an alternative route to the west is possible but faces serious problems
