FW 1.04
"The new app and firmware update is officially released. I have it on a staged rollout for folks that have apps on auto update on their devices, but you can go to the App Store or Google Play and update immediately. After installing the app (1.0.13), go to the Settings gear icon to update your Waxwing (1.04). Beta testers should go ahead and update, too. At some point the Betas will stop working.
New Waxwing 1.04 Firmware
- Improved digital output with S/PDIF channel status support. Any DAC or streamer should now properly display the 24/48 or 24/96 output and bitrate
- Fixes iPad app bug with disappearing popups from settings, language and connection window area. This bug showed up with iOS 26.1 update.
- Magic has been revved to version 2.0 (internally speaking). It is a little better discriminating and smoother with less distortion. This smoother part may make the Waxwing a bit better behaved with some external DACs. Just a step or two forward. My planned Magic work in 2026 will probably be much more of a leap forward.
- Super Mono has been revved to version 2.0 (also internally speaking). I've made a major improvement on how the sections of audio (summed, left, or right) are blended together. Basically, it has less distortion and is clearer, especially on louder segments.
- Added alternate Fine Balance control interface in Mono and Super Mono functions. During a moderate loudness monaural music passage (not silence or quiet passage), a Balance icon press will determine the optimal channel balance and set it after about 1 second. The icon turns red, letting you know the balancing is occurring. Fine Balance can be reset to +0.0dB by clicking the display text. Note: this balancing helps Mono and Super Mono have optimum performance.
- Changed Grade's grading scale. 'F' has been replaced by: F+, F, F-, and P. P is for Poor. This just gives a bit more room for rating.
- Added Firmware downgrade feature. Press and hold the gray "Update to Firmware version 1.0x" for ten seconds or until the popup changes. Perfect for beta testers to hop back and forth for comparisons. Also useful in case a version has a breaking bug. Note: Bluetooth firmware has had this same behavior.
- Hi (High-cut filter): added 3kHz, 4kHz, and 6kHz. Removed the lowest three (experimental) values of 5Hz, 10Hz, and 15Hz. Should be useful for the 78 RPM folks.
App 1.0.13 Changes:
- New logo splash screen pop up on app load. It was a white screen while the language file gets loaded at startup.
- Added confirmation to "Reset to Default" buttons (in Settings gear menu) added in 1.0.12 to prevent accidental resets. Note that this reset is equivalent to loading the 'MM 38dB' preset. Just wanted something easier for new users that got into trouble.
- Fixed app Mute button/icon behavior. A 'Mute is ON' state would be reset to 'Mute is OFF' when the app was closed and reopened.
- Edited German language option.
- Added Korean language option.
- Added more description on cart threshold adjustment slider in Log."
