Standard mats are £13.57 + VAT.
Info is from memory... but it will be close to the fact:
If you refer back to a review Martin Colloms did in the Hi Fi Critic magazine a couple of years ago (the same issue as the Radikal Review I recall) he was very surprised that there were audible differences.
I believe it was Jon Honeyball who runs an XV-1t/Aro/Keel/Radikal/Urika in a beautiful Harban Koa plinth (and co-reviewer for Critic) who alerted him and subsequently Martin being very interested in what the hell was going on, did some tests on the mat which were published in "that" issue of HiFi Critic....... Basically, (and I hope I remember it correctly) he found some differential in the packing/density of the mat fibres from one side to the other and this he felt was contributing to the differences in sound between the two sides...... It's a good read as with all Martin's writings IMHO, if you can find the review.
As many of you know and indeed some have written here..... That matting of the Linn mat is no more than snake oil and there's no difference between the sides.
Perhaps this is the time to "out" this view here
as it is wrong!
Quite simply guys, if you can't tell the difference in the sides of the felt mat, then your LP12 is not giving it's best. i.e. not set up to it's best. I have shown this to clients on this on a Valhalla decks let alone Lingo or Radikal decks.
This may be a controversial view. However, each and every time I mat an LP12 following a client set-up here, with the client listening to his or her own deck, the differences are apparent to all. - Quite often I get the comment.......... "I thought the bit about the mat was bulls**t, snake oil etc"....... Ah, no....... No it's not.
Indeed, just to go a little further.... One can hear small differences between some of the new mats on occasion too!!! - The new mats are limp and thin and as they age they pukker up and feel stiffer.... This is then time to replace them IMHO.
Now then, given I hear differences between mats, it's not surprising that A N other mat may well sound different too..... The Achromat is clearly different... as is the Ringmat for example. Different doesn't always mean better though.
So, on to the subject of this thread...... Does Brian and Trevor's mat sound better? - Well, I'm certain it will sound different, and given these guys are both Ex-Linn employees and have a pretty good idea about a tune demo, I'm certain it will be good. How good? Well, within the next week or two when BevC and I can find a convenient time to listen, she's going to pop in to see me with her mat. All will then become clear I hope.
