Between a tenth and a third of people don't get enough sleep, say the sleep experts.
And the consequences can be serious – ranging from reduced productivity at work, through to obesity, depression and road accidents.

There's also a biological reason. The body has a 24-hour body clock, with lows in the early hours of the morning and in the hours after lunch. Our blood levels of cortisol fall, and we get sleepier and less alert. Our bodies are telling us to snooze.

It turns out an afternoon snooze might even protect against heart disease.
Researchers from the University of Athens Medical School wondered why countries where siestas are commonplace also tend to have low rates of death from heart disease.
They looked at 23,681 people with no history of coronary heart disease, stroke, or cancer and asked them whether they had an afternoon nap and, if so, for how long and how often. They followed them for around six years.
After taking into account other illnesses, physical activity and diet, they found that those who occasionally napped had a 12 per cent reduced risk of dying of a heart attack, and those who napped every day, a 37 per cent reduced chance compared to those who didn't nap at all. The reduction in risk was greater in men who were working, rather than those who were unemployed or retired.
