Tror de fleste av dere missforstår dette med at new wave i starten var "avansert punk", og at det etterpå utviklet seg til noe langt bredere.
Og det er litt som å mange av metalheads, mener band som linkin park ikke er metall, fordi mange ikke vil se på det som det, men per definisjon er det metall.
Utviklet seg og utviklet seg, det er kanskje riktigere å si at plateselskapene klistret "new wave"-etiketten på stadig flere band, lengre og lengre bort fra den opprinnelige musikkformen, inntil begrepet var så utvannet at det nesten ikke hadde noen mening lenger.
Forskjellen på new wave og metal som du drar frem som eksempel er at metalen har undersjangre som gjør det ryddigere.
Linkin Park f.eks er Nu Metal.

New wave music is an ambiguous category of pop or rock music from between the late 1970s to mid-1980s with ties to the original wave of punk rock.[12] New wave music was first considered the same as punk rock before being identified as a genre in its own right, incorporating aspects of electronic and experimental music, mod subculture, disco and 1960s pop music.
New wave differs from other movements with ties to first-wave punk as it displays characteristics common to pop music, rather than the more "arty" post-punk,[though it incorporates much of the original punk rock sound and ethoswhile arguably exhibiting greater complexity in both music and lyrics. Common characteristics of new wave music, aside from its punk influences, include the use of synthesizers and electronic productions, the importance of styling and the arts, as well as a great amount of diversity.
New wave is seen as one of the definitive genres of the 1980s; the genre became a fixture on MTV, and the popularity of several new wave artists has been partially attributed to the exposure that was given to them by the channel. In the mid-1980s, differences between new wave and other music genres began to blur. New wave has enjoyed resurgences since the 1990s, after a rising "nostalgia" for several new wave-influenced artists. The revivals in the 1990s and early 2000s were small, but became popular by 2004; subsequently, the genre has influenced a variety of other music genres.

The album includes the controversial "Pull My Strings" which was played only once on March 25, 1980, when the Dead Kennedys were invited to perform at the Bay Area Music Awards in front of music industry bigwigs to give the event some "New Wave credibility". The band spent the day of the show practicing "California Über Alles", the song they were asked to play. In typically subversive, perverse style, the band became the talking point of the ceremony when after about 15 seconds into the song Jello Biafra said, "Hold it! We've gotta prove that we're adults now. We're not a punk rock band, we're a new wave band."
The band, who all wore white shirts with a big, black S painted on the front, pulled black ties from around the backs of their necks to form a dollar sign, then started playing "Pull My Strings", a satirical attack on the ethics of the mainstream music industry. The song also referenced The Knack's biggest New Wave hit, "My Sharona". The song was never recorded in the studio but this performance, the first and only time the song was ever performed, was included on the album.[1][2]

Ja det er elementer av begge. Går for det.. Selv om jeg egentlig driter i det...
Fyren lengst til venstre illustrerer konseptet om new wave som "geeky punk" aldeles utmerket. Hvite middelklassekids som kanskje ikke ville greid seg veldig bra i et gateslagsmål med punkere, men som derimot kunne litt mer enn ett gitargrep. Tror kanskje DK's mente dette litt sarkastisk...
Men hva med Blue Aeroplanes fra Bristol, ca 1984-85? Er det kategorien "arty post-punk"? En konsert med dem i 1985 er fortsatt en av de to-tre beste konsertene jeg har vært på. De holder visst på ennå.
