Reflections on May Ninth
Got the chance to listen to May Ninth today and really enjoyed it. The sound feels like the more subdued, patient cousin of So We Won’t Forget. So We Won’t Forget’s frenetic “never enough paper, never enough letters,” is replaced with the ever-patient “waiting for May to come, hoping for the rain.” Despite the different approaches to time and patience, both share a consistent motif of memory and remembrance, as well as the image of a sprawling tree.
To me, May Ninth represents contentedly waiting through the April showers to get to the blooms in May. It’s a recognition of the rain and the multicolored gray as an essential part of nurturing the May flowers and their growth.
Between May Ninth and A Love International, Khruangbin is reeling itself back in to a more subdued “core” set of sounds. It’s a long way away from the Ethiopian coloratura of Connaissais de Face or the Jabba’s sail barge sounds of Pretty Boys or Time (You and I).
Looking forward to the deeply introspective, acoustic Khruangbin we seem to be on track for receiving with the full release of A La Sala. TUSUY
EDIT: Wow. Just got a chance to watch the actual music video. Doesn’t change any of my thoughts up above. The May flowers and blooms are clearly of a more specific sort than I thought, but are still there. The video was 3 of the most densely fertility coded minutes of my visual life. The matryoshka nesting doll, the seed, the swimming, the branching on both sides. What a visual ode to life itself. Again, the flip side of the coin to So We Won’t Forget’s depictions of death and blood. The Leezy is strong with this one.
