An embodiment of our philosophy of 'less is more', HotHead phono M does not use cheap and cheerful operational amplifiers. Instead we have gone the more difficult (and ultimately much more sonically rewarding) route of using a highly optimised minimalistic design with individual transistors. All transistors are the legendary ultra-low noise LSK170 JFETs (probably the lowest noise and most linear amplification devices ever made). Use of JFETs also reveals much more fine detail in the music than is possible with bipolar transistors and gives a more 'tube' like character particularly near overload. Highly developed earthing topology and sophisticated power supply filtering deliver a remarkably low noise figure of 81dB unweighted SNR making this one of the quietest phono stages available. Phono stage noise is orders of magnitude lower than the noise on the quietest virgin vinyl pressing. A single ended pure class 'A' head stage delivers very high gain to minimise overall noise. This feeds a passive RIAA filter built with close tolerance components which applies highly accurate equalisation. A second gain stage (single ended class 'A' as before) restores the filter loss and brings the overall gain to the 42dB target. Finally the output passes through a voltage buffer to isolate loading effects and lower output impedance making HotHead phono M capable of driving any follow-on stage without distortion. Just 4 JFET's per channel, one of which is not even in the signal path. Simple, elegant, brilliant. In line with our philosophy, there is no negative feedback used to force linearity. Instead sophisticated computer modelling and a bespoke mathematical JFET transfer function were used to optimise bias conditions. Then during build each JFET is hand selected and matched to ensure the highest linearity and lowest noise. The result is that HotHead phono M delivers the astounding acoustic benefits of a single ended, pure class 'A' zero feedback design. Stripped of feedback and unnecessary complexity all music, whether classical, vocal, hard rock or anything in between sounds more alive, vibrant and immediate. Subtle hidden details are revealed such as the sounds of fingers on guitar strings or the singers breath. As HotHead phono M breaks in an expansive and beguiling 3D sound stage develops, extending wide and deep.
