Susanna: Flower Of Evil

”Flower of Evil” is twelve sublime cover versions of mostly well known songs as well as two Susanna originals, all beautifully sung by one of the most exceptional new voices of recent years, lovely accompanied by her trusted band members Helge Sten (Deathprod, Supersilent) and Pål Hausken (In The Country) and with Bonnie ”Prince” Billy guesting on two songs. Whether it´s Thin Lizzy or Sandy Denny, Black Sabbath or Nico, Lou Reed or Abba, all are given the very personal Susanna treatment. Susanna is known as an extraordinary interpreter of songs, "Love Will Tear Us Apart" and "Hallelujah" from Susanna and the Magical Orchestra´s "Melody Mountain" have been widely hailed as excellent versions of "difficult" songs. The third album from these two excellent musicians was recorded live at various European venues, although the high level of musicianship, focus on detail and high recording quality could easily lead you to think it would be a meticulously assembled studio recording. With ”Rest At Worlds End” the duo continue their adventurous explorations of abstract grooves and atmospheric moods. But don´t expect any live versions of previous studio tracks, these are all brand new tracks,
11 on the CD and 18 on the limited double LP edition.

Ståle Storløkken is a founder member of Supersilent, Elephant9 and Terje Rypdal´s Skywards and is probably the most interesting and versatile electric keyboard player operating on the Norwegian scene at the moment.

Drummer and composer Thomas Strønen is a regular member of Food, Maria Kannegaard Trio and Parish, his quartet with the superb Swedish pianist Bobo Stenson.

The limited double vinyl edition including 7 bonus tracks and free mp3 downloads will be available next week.

Ambitious, epic and grand in scale, In The Country´s third album ”Whiteout” qualifies to be called their magnum opus. Most of the music was performed and written as a thank you, as is the tradition, after leader Morten Qvenild was awarded Kongsberg Jazzfestival´s prestigious Musician Award. Other receivers have included notables such as Nils Petter Molvær, Bugge Wesseltoft and Sidsel Endresen. Qvenild is already established as a writer with a strong signature, original and melodic with elements from many genres of music. His playing is rich in detail and dynamics but never dominant. These eight compositions are all between seven and twelve minutes and are given time to develop, much like the best exploratory jazz and progressive rock music. Another triumph from the band whose previous effort was dubbed ”one of the finest and most arresting albums to come out of Europe this year” by Downbeat.

The vinyl version of Susanna and The Magical Orchestra´s new album "3" now finally looks to be released around mid November. Comes as a double 180 g cut at 45 rpm from the original 24/96 masters for the best possible audio performance, all packaged in a handsome gatefold sleeve and including free mp3 downloads.

At around the same time we will also have the Runeology 4 sampler available for free when purchasing other items from the catalogue. It features tracks from all 2009 releases as well as a couple of tasters for 2010. Stay tuned.

This intercontinental improvising ensemble has been going since 1984 with various members, but a couple of years ago leader and legendary Norwegian sax and clarinet player Frode Gjerstad handpicked a new band of musicians that has meant something special for him during his long career. The title of this monumental 3CD set is relevant on several levels. Between the youngest and oldest musician there are some fifty years, they come from three continents and they cover a wide range of musical ideas with their unique blend of acoustic, electric and electronic instruments. Frode Gjerstad wanted this to be a celebration of improvised music and we can only agree that he has succeeded on all levels. The music ranges from the volcanic to the quietly floating where it´s equally important for the musicians to know when not to play. In many ways this can be be seen as a great and relevant introduction to the many shades of free jazz and improvised music. The recordings were made at recent jazz festivals in Molde, Moers and Zürich.

Playing on all three discs are Frode Gjerstad (sax and clarinet), Louis Moholo-Moholo (drums), Morten J. Olsen (electronics and drums), Anders Hana (electric guitar), Nick Stephens (acoustic bass), Børre Mølstad (tuba), Sabir Mateen (sax and clarinet), Kevin Norton (vibraphone), Bobby Bradford (cornet) and Lasse Marhaug (electronics). Paal Nilssen-Love (drums) and Ingebrigt Håker Flaten (acoustic bass) are playing on disc one and two while Per Zanussi (electric bass) and Hamid Drake (drums) are playing on disc three.

Litt nyheter fra Rune Grammofon

Because of overwhelming demand we have pressed another 300 copies of Elephant9´s great debut album. This is the same as the first edition, white vinyl and the same fantastic gatefold sleeve.

The same goes for the Shining two-pack, 300 copies, but this time on white vinyl. Both the original Rune Grammofon releases are included in full and the sleeve is the same as with the first edition.

For international customers it´s smart to order these at the same time as they are just under 1 kg and will save you good money on postage. But please note that even one cd in addition will make it over 2 kg and much more expensive. The difference in postage for Norwegian customers is smaller.

Please also note that on 22. February we will release the new Elephant9 album on both CD and LP and the first Motorpsycho 7” for quite some time. This is a shorter version of X-3 (Knuckleheads In Space) b/w I.C.U (Boinganoid), an outtake from the HMF sessions, and comes in a Kim Hiorthøy picture sleeve. Please note that this little beauty comes in a limited edition of 1000 copies for the world and only on Rune Grammofon. Please don´t email us orders, these will be ignored. Den til Circulasione Totale Orchestra virker interessant. Jeg var på flere konserter med Gjerstad i forskjellige band på åttitallet, og med all den inspirasjon som den mannen klarer å absorbere så borger dette godt for denne trippel-disken.

Rune Grammofon artister på by:larm

This annual music business festival will take place in Oslo 18-20 February. There will be a Rune Grammofon evening at Mono on 18. February with Bushman´s Revenge and Elephant9. Elephant9 will certainly play from their brand new album, and Bushman´s Revenge will preview some new material from their excellent new album to be released in April. It will be possible to buy their LPs and CDs at the venue. Susanna and the Magical Orchestra and Supersilent also have concerts, check our site for details.

On Friday 19. February there will be special instore performances from Susanna and the Magical Orchestra (16.00)
and Bushman´s Revenge (17.00) at the Big Dipper record store. The artists are also available for signing of records.
