John Culshaw forutså fremtiden i "Ring Resounding"

Ja, etter anbefaling i en annen tråd har jeg nettopp fullført "Ring Resounding".

Dette er jo en fantastisk historie, og en bok med mange gullkorn, men jeg likte spesielt følgende passasje i avsluttende kapittel (side 258):

By the next generation, it is not unreasonable to think that [The Ring] may be seen as well as heard.

To imagine this, it is necessary to forget our present, somewhat primitive methods of viewing through the ordinary television set. There is no possible reconciliation between that small picture and the sort of sound which can be produced from a modern recording. [...] But who supposes that in twenty years we shall still be watching the same sort of box? Is it not likely that the television screen of the future will be more like a picture which you hang on the wall, and adjustable to the size of the room? Or it may be like those roll-up maps which, at school, could be pulled down at will from the ceiling. Whatever form it takes, we can be sure of several things: it will be much less clumsy than our present apparatus; it will be much larger; it will give an accurate color picture, eventually with depth, and it will incorporate stereo sound, coming from its source in the picture.

The listener, or viewer, or whatever one calls him, will wither be able to play his own tapes or records over such a system to produce sound and vision, or he will be able to command such a performance to take place by dialing some code through which a computer will channel the performance to him.

Dette er altså skrevet i 1967, det tok noen flere år enn han antok, men han forutså hjemmekino, YouTube og Dolby Atmos! (Og 3D, for så vidt, men det har ikke helt tatt av)

Nå gikk jo Culsaw fra Decca til TV-produksjon, så det var ikke uventet at denne fremsynte mannen hadde noen visjoner i denne retningen.
A propos dette så lanserer DGG fjorårets Parsifal fra "Hovedscenen" på CD eller Blu-Ray. Jeg synes TV-produksjoner ofte har uengasjerende lyd, forvrengt, støyete og flat dynamikk, men kanskje denne er bedre?

Ble inspirert til å sette Das Rheingold på. Dvs jeg kom over en samleboks fra Decca med DMM mastering vinyl, med hele Ringen.

Til Deccas skam uten at John Culshaw nevnes hverken på cover eller i programmet med libretto og sceneanvisninger.

Riktignok noen bilder fra opptakene, men merkelig at det gjøres lite vesen av hvor banebrytende arbeidet var.
