Now that it's out of business, anyone know if there's another service like Nimber that can be used to transport items (e.g. speakers without their original boxes) across the country?

Yes. Tried it once. The group has a surprisingly high activity. Seems to be a mix of professional drivers and private ones.
On Facebook, users are supposed to be known with their real name and identity, which means a certain security. But all bookings are between individuals, so difficult to generalize. But if you can't get to terms with one driver, you can search for another. Good luck.
