Concerning the tweeter’s sonic aging issue (loss of their freshness and sparkle during heavy use for some few years), as well in my quest for the best professional way to refresh their sonic behavior “like brand new” but in a more “saving money” way (because a new pair of tweeters costs ~200-300 €, depending the VAT and shipping costs), I asked Seas (the manufacturer of Seas Excel tweeters of the previous series of ATC) to give some relevant professional information.
See below my Queries (Q), as well their answers (A):
1. Q: I have repeatedly detect that after many months or few years of heavy SPLs in monitoring in my ATC SCM 100 ATSL active speakers, the Seas Excel tweeter’s freshness and air is been gradually reduced to the point that loudspeaker become a bit dull, a bit distorted in HF, as well its low frequencies become unpleasantly prominent! Replacing the Excel tweeters with brand new ones, the freshness and silkiness returns suddenly, as well distortion disappears!! This is not a placebo!
Is this because of the gradual evaporation of ferrofluid, that: (a) lives residuals that prevent the free movement of voice coil? (b) degrease the mass of ferrofluid in the voice coil which alters its damping behavior? (c) The gradual absence of ferrofluid gradually alters the SUBSTANCE of the voice coil varnish (or causes sort circuits)? Or something else happens (maybe in the dome-voice coil)?
A: We do not think that the Ferro fluid will change viscosity within a year. After a period of several years this will be the case. But some persons with "golden ears" might hear this after one year. Another thing is the stiffness of the surround and the dome. As more it is played, the softer it will became. It might change the characteristics of the sound. The above reasons might be the explanation for hearing a difference, installing a new tweeter.
2. Q: If I very professionally and correctly wipe-remove the old (aged from heavy use) ferrofluid from an Excel tweeter and refill it with fresh new one ferrofluid of the very same type that you use, could I approach the exact sonic behavior of a new one tweeter of yours?
A: This is the way to remove and add new ferro fluid in a tweeter. But there is also the stiffness of the surround and cone that will be different on a new tweeter.
3. Q: Or it should be better to replace as well the voice coil+dome?
A: Replacing the coil+diaphragm sub assembly (rep. kit), and new ferro fluid will make the tweeter brand new and as fresh as possible.
The ferrofluid we use In Seas Excel (T25CF001 E0006) tweeters is ferrotec’s APG L11: https://ferrofluid.ferrotec.com/prod...apg-l/apg-l11/
The rep kit of voice coil+diaphragm sub assembly for Seas Excel is called H9920-06 REP.SET T25C*001, and usually our distributors have stock of it. Seas distributors: (LOUDSPEAKER DRIVERS DISTRIBUTION)
4. Q: A lot of professionals (??) in repairing tweeters in my country, suggest me to empty-whip the old-aged ferrofluid, and NOT to refill the air gap and voice coil with new ferrofluid at all, insisting that this way tweeter should be “airier”! Does those “suggestions” make any sense, or they should be harmful to the sonic behavior, as well the tweeter should be in danger to be fried in moderate to heavy use?
A: We sell as well tweeters without ferrofluid. The ferrofluid help to cool the voice coil, so it handles more power. At the same time, the viscosity of the fluid increases the mechanical resistance (Qms) in the tweeter. Some prefer tweeters without ferrofluid due to this.

Hva er erfaringene blant pasientene her; skifter dere slike diskanter med «jevne mellomrom»?
