# Here, for the first time, are the complete Deutsche Grammophon recordings that Paul Hindemith made with the Berlin Philharmonic in the 1950s. Previously two CDs were issued in the Dokumente series at the beginning of the 1990s.

# First release on CD of the Concerto for Orchestra, the Konzertmusik, the Symphonic Dances, Amor and Psyche and Harmony of the World.

# These are marvellous, virtuosic renditions of some great works - the brief Concerto for Orchestra (12 minutes) will come as a revelation to many, both for its musical qualities and for the quality of the recording. The same can be said for the Konzertmusik, with the great French pianist Monique Haas as a redoutable soloist.

# As a bonus, there is a short spoken recording, of Hindemith promoting his recent recordings with the Berlin Philharmonic, captured apparently during a tour in Japan in 1956: fast-spoken, full of enthusiasm, it is the equivalent of today's promo video.

# In the CD booklet a double page is reproduced from a notebook Hindemith kept of wrong spellings of his name by correspondents ("Dear Dr. Dindemith", "Hindewich", "Paul Hindelita", "Hindemilk"). Très amusant!

# The set includes her complete DG lieder recordings from Mozart to Milhaud, taking in popular Schubert, Schumann, Brahms, Wolf and Strauss, and ending with a delightful Liederabend that includes some folksongs.

# Also, an extensive selection of Streich's opera and operetta highlights, excluding only the material that is already on Originals, and the Original Masters Christams Album and The Singles. Here, for the first time on CD, is the complete Bastien und Bastienne, as well as many other rarities (including previously unreleased Donizetti: the Tirolienne from La Fille du Regiment). # Hear how a master conductor delivers the goods! Hans Rosbaud (1895-1962), linked famously to the 1950s avant-garde through his activities at Donaueschingen and at South-West German Radio in Baden-Baden, was completely at home in any repertoire from Gluck and Haydn to Xenakis and Ligeti.

# In 1954 Francis Poulenc remarked: Music buffs believe that the greatest living conductor is Toscanini; musicians know that it is Hans Rosbaud. His commercial recordings are about as rare as Carlos Kleibers! Here now are his Complete Recordings on Deutsche Grammophon, in a 5-CD set ranging from Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, Rachmaninov and Sibelius to Blacher, Stravinsky, Berg and Webern.

# The Blacher and Rachmaninov works are completely new to CD and most of the rest has long been unavailable. If Rosbauds award-winning Sibelius recordings are already legendary, not to miss on the new set are revelatory 1957 recordings from the Westminster-Véga catalogue of Berg (op. 6), Stravinsky (complete ballet Agon) and Webern (op. 6), astounding examples of clarity and precision for their time.

# In the summer of 1953 the 35-year-old Leonard Bernstein made his first recordings of five classics of the symphonic repertoire (Beethoven Eroica, Schumann 2, Brahms 4, Dvorák "New World", Tchaikovsky "Pathétique") for the Decca Record Company in America. For the first time these recordings are now appearing on CD.

# This exceptional box is further enhanced by the inclusion of the fascinating Listening Guides (Musical Analyses) that Bernstein later recorded for the Book-of-the-Month Club in 1957 to accompany the musical recordings also a CD first! * "Géza Anda (1921-1976) was the epitome of keyboard elegance" wrote the renowned piano music critic Bryce Morrison. Wilhelm Furtwängler referred to Anda as a "troubadour of the piano" on the occasion of a joint concert they gave in 1943, around the time of the earliest recordings in this set. Anda was a disciplined perfectionist who worked painstakingly at his interpretations, his technique and the master classes he gave.

* This CD set provides a near-complete overview of the Hungarian pianist's career, from his earliest recitals in wartime Berlin up to his premature death of cancer in early 1976. The early Liszt performances remind us of Andas Hungarian background, while the other early Romantics also feature prominently. As Morrison puts it, "Anda's Chopin, Liszt and Schumann - and, most particularly, his Schumann - were all enlivened and illuminated by his magic, his coruscating wit and refinement, the products of a phenomenally acute ear and of the reflexes of a born musical athlete." Separate interpretations of Schumann's Etudes symphoniques from 1943 and 1963 provide the opportunity to appraise Anda's artistic development.

* Nearly all of the recordings in this set were either out of production or have never been available on CD internationally, and the 1942-3 recordings, apart from the Schumann, are all receiving their first official CD release. In the case of the Franck Symphonic Variations with Eduard van Beinum we were able to locate a tape copy from the since-destroyed original metal parts, permitting optimum sound quality.

* The concerto recordings in the set showcase distinguished partnerships with van Beinum, Rafael Kubelik and Ferenc Fricsay. The last movement of the Brahms Second Piano Concerto with Fricsay has long been famous for its authentic Hungarian atmosphere.

* Of the solo works, Anda's interpretation of Schubert's posthumous B flat Sonata is appearing on CD for the first time.

* The first British artist to appear in the Original Masters series, Reginald Kell was born in York in 1906. After playing for some years in the famous pre-war London Philharmonic under Sir Thomas Beecham and making a still-unsurpassed recording of Brahms's Clarinet Quintet with the Busch Quartet, he immigrated to the USA soon after the war. There he forged a successful concert career as well as found time to give Benny Goodman some clarinet lessons! At first under contract to EMI/Columbia in the UK, after the war he transferred his allegiance to American Decca where he made almost all his subsequent recordings before retiring at the early age of 51. He died in 1981, and 2006 will mark both his birth centenary and the 25th anniversary of his death.

* Kell was arguably the first clarinetist both to play his instrument in tune from top to bottom and to apply vibrato consciously and consistently to his tone, a technique he modeled after his fellow LPO principal, the oboist Leon Goossens. Wilhelm Furtwängler said on one visit, "Mr. Kell, I would like you to know that you are the first clarinetist I have heard who plays from the heart."

* As we can hear from this complete survey of his American Decca discs, few of which have been issued outside the USA before (although a couple of the Mozart and Brahms works found their way onto the DG label in Germany and onto Decca/Brunswick in the UK in the 1950s), Kell's tone was unusually alluring and his sense of style across all repertoires - whether classical, crossover or jazzy - unusually assured. His participation in Bartók's Contrasts is remarkable for its ease of execution and almost trumps Goodman's playing in the famous recording with fellow-dedicatee Joseph Szigeti and Béla Bartók himself.

* This comprehensive box includes many of the highlights of the clarinet repertoire as well as lesser-known works. Listeners can delight in the jazzy Templeton Pocket-Size Sonata No.1, the atmospheric crossover pieces with orchestra by Walter Mourant, or even the hilarious Dance of the Three Old Maids by Reginald Porter Brown. The Saint-Saens Sonata is infused with Kell's baleful vibrato, while Beethoven and Brahms trios are performed with distinguished partners Frank Miller (principal cellist of the NBC Symphony Orchestra) and Mieczyslaw Horszowski (Pablo Casals' favourite chamber music pianist). The Fine Arts Quartet lend distinguished support to the Mozart and Brahms quintets.

* Leinsdorf (1912 - 1993) enjoyed a reputation as a martinet with orchestras. An assistant to Toscanini, he was closely associated with the Metropolitan Opera in New York and served as chief conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra from 1962 to 1969, after which he guest-conducted all over the world.

* The orchestra on the recording is the Royal Philharmonic of London, asked by the name "Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra of London", as it was under exclusive contract to another record company at the time.

Legendary classic and jazz studio takes by Violinist of the Century Jascha Heifetz

* This new catalogue edition is a collection of Jascha Heifetz's legendary recordings of concert encores

* Heifetz (1901-1987) has regularly been dubbed "The Violinist of the Century", and there is no doubt he set standards of technical perfection and virtuosity that all violinists look up to. Between 1944 and 1946 he was exclusively signed to "American" Decca and these recordings of concert encores and miniatures now belong to DG

* The edition is new remastered, at the hands of Andrew Wedman at Emil Berliner Studios in Hanover. Wedmann has created the best sound ever for these recordings unbelievably clear and acoustically convincing for recordings over 60 years old.

* The track lists of the two CDs reveal a wonderful range of favourites from classical to jazz highlights include the legendary Gershwin arrangements from Porgy and Bess and the Three Preludes to Weill's Mac the Knife with its uncanny left-hand pizzicati!

* As additional tracks, we've included two lovely numbers with orchestra with BING CROSBY, the great crooner, on the Lullaby from Godards Jocelyn and "Where My Caravan Has Rested".

* Heifetz was also an excellent pianist. We've also included a gem of a bonus track: one and a half minutes of Heifetz playing his own song "When You Make Love To Me" on piano! This material has never been released before. There's another piano solo, "So Much In Love", on offer on iTunes.

Emil Gilels - Early Recordings

* The Russian pianist Emil Gilels (1916 1985) would have been 90 on 26 October 2006. He was one of the greats; to use an old-fashioned expression, he was the Real Thing. We are celebrating this anniversary in style, with three releases

* Here are rare Melodiya recordings from 1935 to 1955, made available on CD for the first time with serious remastering, including many encores pieces, the Schumann Toccata, Scarlatti sonatas, and sonatas by Beethoven and Medtner astonishingly virtuosic playing.

* But my goodness, here was a boy I remember it as if it happened yesterday with a mass of red hair and freckles, who played I cant describe it. All I can say is, if he ever comes to America, I may as well pack my bags.
(Artur Rubinsteins famous salute to the young Emil Gilels, prompted by a visit which Rubinstein made to Odessa, Gilelss birthplace, in 1931.)
