StereoKnight Silverstone
"Full, detailed, and warm, until I realized after switching back and
forth a few times that that music sounded exactly the same! All
preamps I have used impart some sort of sonic signature on
the signal, both good and bad, but this was nothing. No matter
the song or album I cycled through the Silverstone, I could not
hear an audible difference in the preamp. This is great for
audio enthusiasts who love their system and dont want to
throw off its balance with a sub-par piece of equipment. But, if
you are looking to improve your system by adding or removing
a sound or signal effect with your preamp, the Silverstone may
not be well-suited for that task. With full bandwidth, regardless
of settings, the passive design with no impedance-matching
problems, this is a passive that doesn't sound flat, boring and
bereft of life. especially using the balanced inputs which takes
full advantage of the quad of signal shaping transformers.
Being a big fan of DIY audio projects, the Silverstone does not allow for any modifications, as it has no coupling ca-
pacitors or resistors, and thus nothing to change out... but also nothing to break. The StereoKnight preamp is essen-
tially unbreakable. The Silverstone will also age better than any active component as it has no power supply to fail or
electrolytic capacitors to leak, and its solid-core, Teflon-coated wire can withstand any amount of voltage or current
thrown at it. Plus, if you even move to a different part of the world, you do not need to sell your preamp as it is not
voltage dependent (again, being completely passive), and will never short out or be under-powered. As much as I
love modifying audio equipment, there is nothing the DIYer can do to the StereoKnight Silverstone Preamp to improve
itand that is the mark of a great component. However, if you really are in the mood for an upgrade and you just do
not feel the standard Silverstone will cut it, James will be offering a solid-core, pure silver-wired version. Pricing has
not been yet been determined.
Once again, James has developed a stellar product
that combines complete functionality with sound qual-
ity comparable to the best; all in a sleek chassis that
means business. The StereoKnight Silverstone Bal-
anced Passive Preamplifier is a cut above the rest in
build quality and sound quality. It not only allows your
sources to sound their best, it feeds your amplifier a
more likeable signal. It may not have a remote con-
trol, and it may have separate left and right volume
controls, but isn't that worth it in the name of better
sounding music? What sounds better than an audio
system that works well together? Nothing. Synergy
is the name of the game in the audiophile world, and
the Silverstone preamplifier and all StereoKnight
products make that synergy a little more attainable."
